Every nurse enters the profession- enters rooms with virulent pathogens each day, long before COVID- because they want to help. They feel called to care for others. Our success is your wellness.
We do not feel called to martyr ourselves in the process. We expect the same protection from our employers as any other working professional- this includes the equipment necessary to do our jobs safely and maintain our own wellness, as we are not just nurses, but people like all of you on our days off- with loved ones, aspirations, and lives to live. We DESERVE to be confident that we will have the tools we need to care safely for your loved ones, and also remain safe ourselves.
We would never expect firemen or police officers to do their jobs without protection. This is our passion and our profession, but it is NOT all that we are as people, and we will not put our own lives at stake. We will exercise our right to refuse work, and this will have dire consequences for the public. We will experience absolute moral anguish as our PPE supplies dwindle, and we are forced to choose our patients, or ourselves.
This should NEVER happen. We are gutted.
Please put pressure on our local MPs, pressure provincial government, donate or source supplies for us, stay home, and perhaps even pray.
